Indications for Angioplasty
Aug 21st 2008
Coronary angioplasty is
done to relieve severe blockages in the blood vessels of the heart. This
is usually done because the patient has been experiencing symptoms due to the
blockage. Symptoms can include chest discomfort, shortness of breath or
any number of other possibilities described in the section on angina.
Angioplasty can also be done to relieve the blockage causing a heart
attack. This is often done as an emergency in an effort to
restore blood flow quickly and minimize the damage caused by a heart attack. If
this is not done as part of the acute treatment, angioplasty if often done
before discharge from the hospital if a severe blockage is discovered.
